I've read a lot of negative comments about how bad the traffic and housing prices (including property taxes) are in Austin (those seem to be the two main gripes - and they appear to be accurate gripes). I'm curious where Austin residents generally go if they move away from Austin? Are there cities they favorite to escape the housing costs and traffic?

Outside of Austin? (e.g. suburbs or small cities in central TX)
Aside from that, it's really all over the place.

Maybe Tampa/St Pete, with three of the top 8 beaches in the country? No income tax and property tax that is 2/3s of Texas?

I would guess that they move further afield...but still in the area.

Where are you going to go with warm weather, no state income tax, low humidity, low crime, jobs and great smoked meat?

You forgot truly hellish allergens.

Back to Denver from where I came.

CA.

East coast.

While the last two are also expensive and have traffic issues, the trade-offs are worth it to many in the way of salaries, scenery (ocean, mountains, etc.), change of seasons, sheer number of things to do and places to visit. Depends on your benchmark for these things, it's all in what you're used to. Austin is lacking in these areas for us. The breakfast tacos are great though.

Back to their original hometowns? At least that's what most of the people that I know have done. I know 3 families that figured out how difficult it is to raise a family nowadays without any help from their extended families so they all went back home. It wasn't really for the other reasons listed by the Op.

Curious to see suggestions as I am scouting a move away in a few years. Mostly looking for a slower pace with more temperate weather. For now I tweak my daily routine around traffic which makes things bearable. Just annoyed some days that I have to think about that!
