Of course any contractor working on your house need liability insurance. It's really a no brainer. If an accident happens do not expect your home insurance will cover the damages. It does not matter how safe any job may seem, weird accidents happen. A carelessly disposed smoke could burn the entire house down. A child could be run over in your driveway. Here in Canada you also have to make sure the contractor has workman's compensation, if not and a worker is hurt on your property doing your work, YOU can be held liable for the cost of the injuries and that can add up to millions.

That brings up a good point. Do I need them to have worker's comp coverage?? The have the $1M liability insurance, but don't have worker's comp coverage.

Do they need it?? None of the contractor's that provided proof of liability coverage, also had worker's comp coverage. I figured that it was because they all use contract labor, not actual employees. Is this right?

I don't believe workers comp. is compulsory in TX.. Most larger contractors carry it to protect themselves. Smaller ones don't bother with it.
