Greetings,

Our family moved from SF bay area to Austin about 2 months ago, the first day our next door neighbor brought over food to welcome us, needless to say we haven't missed california since, well? may be we'll miss it a little during summer but you'll learn to adjust. Everyone is so nice and made us feel welcome and one thing we have now that we've never had living in CA is the sense of community and it feels like you are part of it and you know Texan love where they live and they have great sense of pride.. I don't understand the fuzz about the californian who come here with attitude. What so great about living so closed to your neighbor that 5 years later you don't even know their names and how about traffic, highway conjestions, long lines at supermarket and lines and lines everywhere you go. I just think the crop of bad californians who came here and made bad names for themselves and spoiled it for the rest of us.

Default books re: gullahs, momof2dfw

There are some books in libraries on that area...Jekyll Island, Cumberland Island, etc. off the coast of Georgia. Years ago when living in Jacksonville, FL, took a trip up to Savannah, GA. I was so fascinated by the atmosphere there, plus the feeling I got when I passed through the area where the 'Sea Islands' were, that I went to the library and found some history books on that area. You may find them in the Dallas library or find an interlibrary loan for them from Jacksonville's library (being closer to Savannah may be reason those books were in Jacksonville library). The book(s) talked about the Gullahs on the Sea Islands also. One book was about a woman who was the mistress of a plantation, but was no better off than a slave (at least this is the angle of this history book)---it also gave some history of slaves brought to Virginia (think). One of the books was a history book specific to Georgia (Georgia publication). Wish I could remember the title(s), but maybe they can be found by a good reference librarian.

BTW, the City of Dallas has a LARGE collection of law books some dating back to the 1800's, some leather bound, etc they are trying to sell. If they are not sold real soon they will all be shredded . Everything has gone computer now and there is no need for them. It was on the Channel 8 WFAA news last night. If you or anyone you know is interested I can probably find out who to contact. To me they would be rather interesting, especially the very old ones. I hate to see history like that destroyed.

It sounds as your family has done very well and passed along the thirst for knowledge and the appreciation of the past and history.

Wink Bellingham/Seattle isn't stuck up?!

They move into an area, and summarily proceed to inform people of "how it's done in California". It was very much the same situation experienced in the Northern Virginia area (DC) with the transplants from New York. Everything and everyone is better in New York and they were there to inform you of that. I am considering moving back to where I grew up (San Antonio area) and really do not want to hear how Californians (or New Yorkers for that matter), are going to "improve" the area. I've been gone for a while and really do not want to move into that kind of community. And, unfortunately, one will not know until you actuallly move.
You're from BELLINGHAM, and talking about superior attitude? You all rank right up there with Oregon! I work with a guy from Bellingham and all he does is talk about Bellingham and how great it is and how much California sucks -- yet he attended Stanford and got all of his education and lives here. I wish he would just go back, already! We all laugh about how stuck up he is about BELLINGHAM -- it's a SUBURB of Seattle for heaven's sake!!! What is it about CA. that you all hate? Is it the traffic, 'cause yours is pretty hideous as well in that area of the state. There are people everywhere who are stuck up about where they live -- and don't even get me started on Oregon!Nobody is welcome there -- To be quite honest, there are very few true "Californians" in California. It is very rare to find someone in their 30s whose parents were born and raised here. Not the case in Oregon. Washington is full of transplants as well. I beg to differ that the "California superior attitude" is any different than any "superior attitude" anywhere else ...

Funny, these are two gripes I have about Austin as it is now. I can remember when it was rare to wait for a table at a restaurant. Now I seem to run into lines everywhere I go. But I'm sure the situation here is a reprieve for you.

We came here intending to stay a couple of years and immediately fell in love. There is no place like it on earth. People really go out of their way to welcome you. We keep saying "Why didn't we do this 20 years ago." Religion is still accepted and foreign language is encouraged! Bienvenidos a Austin! Check it out.

I'll have to agree. If you come to Texas you will be welcomed with open arms; but if you are going to talk about how things are better here or there, we will hold the door open for you to leave. We are very protective of our state. Love it or leave it.
