We found a dead coral snake, (yes, really a coral snake) in our driveway with it's head missing. Is that the same kind of message like a deer head in your bed or is it the neighborhood cat we feed giving us a gift? ]

I didn't add this to the other snake thread because that one was about rattlers.

Could have been a bird , cat, or it could have died and something ate its head....

Would love to see one of these in the wild here. I was a crazy kid and caught one in FL, it was a beautiful snake.

LOL Whatever. A dead snake is better than a live one.

(Afterthought - please don't inform me of the good ones and their benefits, I already know. Just adding a little humor here. )

Birds often know about handling poisonous creatures. When I lived in CA, I observed a red tailed hawk who had caught a shrew, take the head off and drop it - because shrews have a poisonous bite. The bird then proceeded to eat the rest. This is a common, self preserving behavior. It could have been that a raptor had caught the snake and taken the head off, but then lost it (mobbed by crows, pursued by another raptor who was hungry, etc.) I once had a song bird just drop onto my patio, dead. When I investigated, I realized that the heart had been excised from the bird's chest. I think this may have been a similar scenario, except that a raptor will sometimes eat the most nutritious parts (the organs) first. It may have lost its prey because of being mobbed by other birds on the defensive. Of course, we don't know for sure, but it is interesting to speculate.
