Austin Telco is a good local credit union but make sure to get your Texas driver's license cause you have to have one to deposit checks but you can set up the account without one.

Yes, I think as far as rates and fees go, it's hard to beat Austin Telco. They just gave me a commercial loan for 6.69% for a property I purchased. And it was extremely low hassle. The banks I tried to work with (before I knew AT did Comm loans) were going to be 8.5% to 11%, with very heavy requirements, including a $2,000 commercial appraisal. Telco did it with a $450 "Broker Opinion" letter. Sweet. I'll never use anyone else.

Steve

Always check bankrate.com for the best interest rates for checking accounts.

I personally use Schwab (3% interest, no atm fees) for my main checking, even though its over the internet. I use BoA to deposit real checks and just transfer it over electronically to my schwab account.

many people like INGDirect.

I think it is Chase or BoA probably.

I use University Federal Credit Union and have for 30+ years. I've tried a bank or three along the way but always went running back home to UFCU (never let the account lapse), because of the personal attention and the way they really DO put your interests first.

Also have an account with Germania Credit Union (we have our insurance with them, too). Haven't dealt with them a lot, given that their in Brenham, but we got the account back when there wasn't a credit union on every corner and jumped at the chance.

Just curious...have you checked with your current credit union? If you're happy with them, you may be able to keep them. We kept ours after a move from Cali. and we use local credit unions' ATMs to deposit checks and there is no fee. Our CU had a list of CU ATMs in TX that allow for deposits and withdrawals and info on fees if any for those services.

Only one mention of Wachovia...our current bank in ATL. We hope to stay with them after the move but have not chosen a mortgage institution so far. DW has many years with the Delta Emp. credit union, but it looks like the closest physical location is Dallas. Good to know about local Austin banks...Thx.

Guaranty bank is the largest Texas Bank and they are very personable. Frost is not the largest Texas based bank!

With all the banking problems these days just make sure you stay under the FDIC limits.
