No we wouldn't - any more than your right to give your opinion.

in threads discussing violence, especially violence perpetrated with guns, that the "go to" solution is diagnosis and effective treatment of mental health issues for the shooters. No one suggested that it is the "go to solution". More like let the doctors & experts take a look at this guy to find out why he was a nut job or a psycho.

This, in a society that says, "what I do, what I own, what I carry around on my person, is none of your business." Not if you are found to be a nut job or a criminal....if you are, then it absolutely is "our business".

How, pray tell, are we as a society supposed to diagnose violent shooters, before they act out, if we draw no conclusions, see no patterns in their behavior?

A boy, such as Whitman, who had issues with his authoritarian, abusive father, may well have also had issues with women (enough to kill his mother and wife, even out of a misguided sense of "protecting them") He killed his mom & wife with knives. Are you suggesting we outlaw knives? How will we cut our meat?

might be the sort of person we're supposed to be on the lookout for. And, he had ready access to lethal weapons; but we wouldn't want that to be abridged, would we? If he's a nut job or a criminal we would.
I agree that abusive behavior by a husband to a wife.... or a parent to a child is a d*mn serious issue, with many possible "solutions".

Not sure that outlawing knives (or guns) is the answer or one of the solutions.

Well said.

Adding that someone who is commits domestic violence (against women, children, or, yes, men - it happens) has mental health issues of their own. No one is saying ignore that, only that that is a small subset of a much larger problem that needs addressing - our attitudes towards and treatment of such issues that on occasion lead to the kind of violence that is the topic of this thread. That you, pop2518808, have your own fixation on violence against women does not mean that it was the primary cause of the Tower shooting - in fact, IF it existed, it would be a symptom of whatever the actual cause was, be it mental illness or a tumor pressing on the amygdala. Way too much focusing on symptoms rather than causes in our society, it sometimes seems, which means we're doomed to failure in stopping them if that is our actual goal

And, yes, people commit violence and murder against others with an amazing variety of tools. It's time to stop talking about gun violence and start talking about violence, if we really want to stop it and aren't just playing politics and bandwagon. The most minimal amount of research into mass killings worldwide shows that.
