Grew up in Houston.

Moved around a bit for career advancement. No regrets. But also, I was single.

Once married, we moved to Austin the first time in 2003. Left in 2005 for my wife's career to Chicago.

After 2 years, we decided that Chicago winters were easier to handle than Austin summers.

Then....real Chicago winter came a callin".

Brutal bone chilling, snot nose, numb fingers, 10 minutes to get dressed to go out, 10 minutes to get undressed and warm up coming in. Pro tip: Do not get a puppy in Chicago in November.

After 10 years and 1 Polar Vortex we decided to get back to Austin.

Wouldn't head back up North again.

It's NOT AS BAD AS THEY ARE MAKING IT OUT TO BE! (but it is pretty fn hot)

Why Austin? Are you purposely trying to move to the southern US, or did the job just happen to be located here? I'm just curious because you're a cold weather person looking for diversity in one of the least diverse large cities in Texas (Houston and Dallas are way more diverse than Austin with a comparable cost of living).

If you're wanting to escape high prices of the NE like a lot of other people, I would put Atlanta on your radar. You won't escape the steamy weather, but Atlanta is one of the most diverse cities I think I've ever been to and it's probably the most "metropolitan" city in the south. Although I must warn you, there are NO cities in the rest of the US that resemble a NE city. I miss it all the time... but I have enough reasons to stay in the south right now to make it very very worth it.

Actually, Atlanta, suburbs and all, is NOT as diverse as you might think. I lived there for over 5 years and its a much more segregated area than several other sunbelt metros. I've been back to visit several times since then and the level of segregation 20 years later is still very surprising. Metro Dallas is 6% Asian and Austin has a twice the Asian population of Metro Atlanta at % of total population - 6.3%

You are making a big mistake!

If you are a fan of colder weather and want to get out of the NE, I think perhaps Denver calls your name.
Austin isn't hotter than southeast Asia and definitely not as humid but I think the OP is just looking for affirmation that really ANY place in the Sunbelt isn't for him. Denver, Portland or Seattle, maybe Chicago sounds like a nice mix of where he should go.

Austin is hotter than most places in SE Asia in the summer. You don't get Hong Kong getting 110 degrees ever. The record high for Hong Kong is 97.9. The record high for Austin is 112. If you pick another city like Singapore they don't even get near as hot as Austin. Singapore's record high is 96.8.

Now as far as humidity, yes SE Asia is far more humid. But the only place that gets the kind of heat Austin in SE Asia is India. India blows Austin away in heat. Highest temp in New Delhi recorded is 117.

You'll really come to appreciate the warm weather when it's a balmy 75 degrees in Austin on New Years Day and 12 degrees in Boston and everybody's freezing their rear ends off.
Came here to say this. We just built a new deck with an outdoor kitchen. You know I'm gonna be out there grilling over the holidays while thinking of my family and friends in the NE!

I admit I am intrigued by the Metrorail. What is the availability like at the station parking lots? Up here in MA, certain lots completely fill up by 7am.

I'm waiting for the company's recruiter to call me so I can visit soon. Really looking forward to it.

It’s strixtly commuter running from about 6 until 5:30. It’s a trek from the north station to the furthest south. For me, if I had a very predictable 9-5 it could work but if you need to travel to meetings if anything it can be a bust. There are a few people here that have taken it to wirkbtgat May be able to chime in. They also have expanded services during big events like sxsw and acl.

It absolutely NOTHING like any type of commuter rail in MA. Definitely come and visit soon. We were just in Boston for a week and it seemed very placid compared to Austin.

That is actually the time I hate the weather here the most. I really miss having cold, winter weather over New Years and Christmas.

I remember when my oldest daughter was 4 years old, and we took her to see Santa. She told him that all she wanted for Christmas was snow. It absolutely broke my heart.

I agree. Just forget the idea that you are going to find anything remotely close to the public transportation systems you have up North.
