So if you want to go into the business of renting dumpsters, bicycles, cars, you should rent them out and tell people to leave them wherever they want to? In front of businesses, on sidewalks, etc.? When cars are left by the side of the road, a warning sticker is put on the windshield and they are removed. I doubt this "business" would be viable for very long when the inventory starts getting hauled to the recycling center because it was abandoned.

There already are rules for dumpsters and cars, so you would be wasting a lot of money and paying a lot of fines/fees (and losing inventory), I suppose, but have at it?

And you are correct, if a business is in violation of a law/regulation, people tend not to do it. If there is no law/regulation, then people can do it. If laws/regulations are created, then they will have to comply or shut down their business.

I am not quite sure what the point is you are trying to make?

Just wanted to chime in here. Your city, as well as a few others, made our local news (Myrtle Beach). A new ordinance was passed here prohibiting shared mobility devices/scooters. Any scooter rentals must be through a business that is staffed with a physical address. They said this is to prevent what is happening in other cities, namely abandoned scooters on sidewalks, bike lanes, parking spaces, etc.

From reading this thread it seems like MB is doing the right thing. Is it really that bad in Austin ?

Yes it is. Scooters & ebikes littering sidewalks everywhere. Not to mention the idiots zooming around on them weaving in & out of auto traffic and pedestrians. I think liability is going to force a lot of regulation on those things as more & more victims take them to civil courts.

Here's a NYT opinion piece about them in Nashville (also mentioning Austin).

Yes, it's worse that "bad", it's a complete failure of local government to regulate safety and common sense.

Maybe we can use MB as an example for next steps.

Thanks for the link. Scooters are an obvious, clear danger.

San Antonio just recently cut down on the numbers allowed and have now regulated them to the streets only. We will see how long that lasts. Other SA suburbs have outlawed them outright.

Not much rain in DT Austin area last night, I don't think. Very little on the south-side, either.
