My wife and I are looking to relocate to the Austin area; she is all set with a great job in healthcare but I'm a bit worried about my opportunities in the area. So, how is the job market for finance professionals (I know there's relative wage depression)? TIA!

Default Define Finance

Are you taking about banking, budget work, accounting? I was a financial analyst in Washington, D.C. before coming to Austin. Everyone I met in Austin thought that meant I was a bank teller. I'm now a budget analyst with the State government. Stupid work, but it's dependable and has a great retirement plan.

I would like something related to the investment industry; I have the CFA and CFP but no CPA.

Austin is, if anything, a gov't and tech center, with the third prong being UT....however, there is an abject lack of presence from the Fortune 500, outside of Whole Foods and Dell.....not a bad thing, but, if you are looking for Financial, Dallas and Houston are far better bets if Texas is your thing....those about beng equal between the two...Dallas maybe having a slight edge........

I know there would be more opportunities in those other cities but we really want to live in Austin. Anyone else know anything about the industry (preferably someone IN the industry (not that I don't appreciate everyone's feedback))??

I'm a CPA with an MBA and even I'm having a hard time switching careers. I'd like to move to another industry because the Land Development/Real Estate industry is just getting worst. Things are really slow right now even though half the state of California is moving here...go figure. I deal with high end homes/land deals and a lot of our clients in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, etc are taking a bath when trying to sell their homes. A lot of them have decided to ride it out and are hoping things turn around in the next year or two. If things do improve, we'll see the migration here from those areas explode.

But like someone else said, Houston and Dallas are great areas for finance/accounting folk. I could find a job in either of those cities in probably a few days at the most. I've lived in Austin most of my life so obviously, I don't want to live there though.

Austin is not that large a metro, AND is essentially a gov't(including UT) and tech center, with a thick layer of service(restaurants and entertainment)......any financial jobs would be hard to find there, as it has very few fortune 500 corporations, or investment banking type jobs....closest you might come would be a bona-fide bank.. maybe you could find something in a bank bank............not being silly.....but, yes, people do sacrfice to live in Austin, and Dallas and Houston are where the money (and financial jobs) are in Tex....however Austin is where the fun and beauty are....
if you want job ops, try the other two....if you are willing to sacrifice, or REALLY bust butt trying to find something, maybe Austin would be your place

My DH and I are hoping to relocate there, too. We're in Houston right now, and yes, the OPs are right, the jobs are here. My DH is in finance, too...CPA, MBA. He has actually come across several opptys through Monster and recruiters. Have you tried any recruiters? What level are you looking at? Analyst? Director? VP?

My DH will be there Monday to interview for a CFO position. Yahoo! Fingers crossed they have something great to offer!

If you are still out there, how did this work out? I know there are multiple accounting jobs but as mentioned in an early post I have the CFA and not the CPA. Anyone else out there have some feedback for me? Thanks!
