Go to the City-Data webpage //www.city-data.com/ and you can look up most zip codes for the demographic data.

And you can look up the crime statistics here:

Austin Police Dept. Crime rates by zip code (http://malford.ci.austin.tx.us/police/zipcode/zipcode/zip_2008.pdf - broken link)

Help - I'm moving into the Travis Station apartments on 183/Ed Bluestein next month. Is this a safe neighborhood - apt community for a single lady

There are some cute pockets in the area that have great potential, but also some very bad areas. I lived out there on E Manor Road for awhile when I was in college, some parts of it were scary then, and have gotten worse. I would not consider moving back there now. I would consider the Western parts of that zip code before I would the Eastern parts.

Highest crime area for aggrevated assault in 2009:

78723 one of the areas with the most violent crime in 2008

I did not realize this was an old thread when I responded above.

To answer your question deb, I consider that part of town one of the worst places you could live in Austin. It is right next door to one of the most poverty stricken areas with the highest violent crime rates in the City. If you are already locked into a lease, I hope the apartment complex has locking gates to keep non-tenants out. You should have a burglar alarm system installed on your apartment and car, do not go out walking alone at night. And move to a better location as soon as your lease expires.
