Monument Cafe in Georgetown just moved into their new location and in fall 2009 is planning on opening a grocery that carries only local products (with "local" meaning Texas coast for seafood, but really local for everything else). That will mean that 7 days a week you'll be able to buy the produce, meat, etc., from local producers. I can't wait!

Other than that, there's LOTS of organic and local growers around. CSA's abound, as well as the numerous farmers' markets (my son especially recommends the Sunset Valley Farmer's Market).

we are a weird family-black male, white wife, adopted chinese daughter, Conservative politically but crunchy and slightly artsy, over educated.

so wel live for CSAs, food coops, farmers markets, alt country music venues, libraries, all outdoors activities, cycling, organic gardening, hikes, indie bookstores and films, as well as our traditional conservative churches, political activities

so we hope to fit in somewhere

You really sound like you'd fit in just fine in the Austin area which has all of that co-existing quite happily next to each other.

Edible Austin has an extensive list of Austin area farmers' markets, by the way.

Frankly, though your past experiences may make it hard to believe, nobody in Austin cares about the ethnic make-up of your family. If anything, it might weird you out that it goes unmentioned by your new friends and acquaintances, or if it is mentioned, it will be done so in a positive, accepting way. I can't think of anywhere in the city that it would matter at all. You'll be judged based on the content of your character (to borrow a phrase) and that's about it.

I'd focus on what you want in a neighborhood, the amenities, convenience and affordability, unless you specifically desire your kid to attend a racially diverse school, then that would direct your search more than any issues of how your family make-up would be received or accepted.

Welcome to Austin!

Steve
