Yep... About me I am 26 Single Male, I don't really do anything at the moment since I don't have permission to work in this country... but will probably look for something to do..

I am moving to a highrise in downtown and well hope everything turns out quite right...

Thing is I literally don't know anyone in Austin... So I will have to look for a way to sort that out...

So any recommendations from the Austinites on how to start my living here on all aspects???

Thanks in Advance!
JC

I'd recommend as far as the not knowing anyone part is concerned getting involved with Do something, Learn something, Share something, Change something - Meetup.com. Lots of meetups about all sorts of activities, including some for people who are new to the area and need to learn their way around. A good, quick way to meet people with similar interests who might be new here like you, might be locals. It's also a good way to network for when you do have your permit to work here. And for the most part, it's free!

I would start out by just getting out there and soaking it all in. Walk down Sixth Street at night, South Congress on a nice day, and check out Barton Springs and the Hike and Bike. Patronize a local coffeeshop or restaurant like Spider House or Polvo's to get to understand the local atmosphere. People are pretty friendly here, so just expose yourself and connections will come eventually.

Brace yourself -- you are moving to downtown during the height of the madness of the SXSW Music and Film festival (Welcome to South by Southwest 2009 | SXSW.com). The town is mobbed with thousands of people.

Things will be much calmer a week later --more "normal" Austin. So if upon arrival you think, "What have I gotten myself into?" just wait a week.

Welcome.
