I thought it would be a good idea to list some pet-friendly stores (besides the obvious PetsMart & PetCo) in the Austin area, esp. the south side. We just adopted a bullmastiff and would like to socialize him as much as possible. Any suggestions? I've heard of Home Depot and Lowes locations abiding pets, but then there are others that don't. Before I got out the phone book and just starting calling everywhere, I figured I'd see if there were any pet freaks here that might know of some places.

Below is a great site that lists hotels, restaurants, stores, parks etc that allow dogs in Austin. Lots of info on different cities and states too.

I just got KICKED out - rudly - of home depot for bring in my dog. The person that stopped me was a "key carrier" (asked if he was a manager) what ever that is. I normaly shop at LOWES with my dog and have never been kicked out but they didnt have the supply's I needed -

I know this will sound dorky and it is, but, we have a pet stroller, that completely zips up so our dogs are completely enclosed. It is a mesh material so they can see out and breathe. It looks almost identical to a baby stroller. We use it when we travel and cannot leave the dogs in the car (in the summer). Most places will not say anything (as long as they don't serve food, then pets are no no's) when the dogs are in the stroller. Often, I think they don't even know they are dogs and not a baby.

Of course, this is not for everyone, but it's a must for us as we travel a lot in the summer.

Socializing with people? You could walk your dog around the Town Lake trail, plenty of people.

You may face additional problems simply because of the breed of your dog. I have seen plenty of people get away with bringing in really small dogs (like chihuahuas) in otherwise restricted areas.
Austin , TX Dog Friendly Establishments
That's another good site for dog-friendly businesses.
I'm sure that as long as dog owners elect to be courteous and clean up after their pets/monitor them more places will become dog friendly.

I was in Saks at the Arboretum last weekend, and a woman brought her dog-in-a-purse with her.

I've seen a few people bring their dogs in the Home Depot on Woodward by St. Edwards Univ.

So what's with that anyway? I am a contractor, and my weenies often roll with me but I never bring them into stores with me. Honestly I have never understood why so many people do this at HD and Lowe's.
