I have some friends from New York coming to visit for a few days. They've never been to Texas before and are really looking forward to their trip.

I asked them for a list of things they'd like to see while they're here so I can start making make arrangements. Well, the first thing they requested was to see some pumpjacks in action. Ugh.

I can't think of any pumpjacks in the Austin or surrounding area. Does anyone know if there are? Even better would be some that are right near a road, or that could be walked up to.

Thanks in advance!

Shoot! Last year you could see quite a few on 71 on the way out of Austin towards Houston, around Bastrop and Smithville. But that was when oil was about $120 a barrel. I haven't checked today but oil is in the $40 range and most of those wells are not profitable at that price. My guess is that most of them are stilled.

But maybe someone who drives that route often can tell you if any are still pumping. You will be able see them from the road, I wouldn't recommend walking up to one.

Check out Luling. Then, while you're there, you can eat outstanding BBQ at the City Market (WAY better than the places in Lockhart, in my opinion).

Yup, Luling south on 183 about 30 miles. City Market is good but so is any place in Lockhart. Do yourself a favor and stop in both cities for good bbq and decide for yourself.

Ah, the great BBQ debate! I think Lockhart is HIGHLY overrated (used to board my horses near there for several years so tried every BBQ place in town often).

But it is a subjective thing, so, yes, you should probably decide for yourself. Good excuse to eat a lot of BBQ!
