Planning on taking family on day trips to Austin (i am an hour north of yall) and would like to find some interesting, unique restaurants in the area. (not necessarily in Austin proper, but in the Austin area)...
Where are some places you would take an out-of-towner and why?
(Think "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" on Food Network, no chain restaurants, i am talking oriiginal, unique, family owned, mom-n-pop places, quintessential Texas or eclectic, places worth the drive, memorable, worth writing home about) )

First thing that comes to mind: Dirty's on the drag -- nice greasy hamburgers and fries.

And, although I would not call it a dive by any stretch, the old-fashioned soda fountain and grill at Nau's Enfield Drug is just the sweetest thing ever. Inexpensive, yummy, and a real blast from the past!

I guess San Marcos is technically "Austin Area" so I have to add Herbert's Taco Hut in San Marcos. It's a dump with fantastic tex-mex, tortillas pulled right of the comal, and even the same waitresses for the last 20 years. Herbert has passed away, but his son runs it now. You can almost always find him behind the register.

Check out Nutty Brown Cafe and Ampitheatre (nuttybrown.com, can I post that?). They are having a free show and Crawfish Boil with kids stuff this Friday evening, if you're looking for dinnertime. Starts at 6:00, cool place, ok food, family friendly, outdoor dining! It's about 7 miles out from the SW edge of Austin.

El Gallo -- across from St. Ed's (plastic flowers in the fountain, decades-long ownership, velvet paintings on the walls, pretty good margarita, decent TexMex)
Kolache Shoppe -- Burnet Rd at Greenlawn Pkwy (melt-in-your-mouth yum)
Omelettry --Burnet Rd (Gingerbread pancakes, it looks and feels like Austin did in the early 70s. They accept cash only, btw)
