Am particularly interested in the support structure for startups. And weird Austin companies that have a passion to change the world.

Emerging areas of technology:
1) Cloud Computing & SaaS
2) Google ecosystem (Analytics, App Engine, Android)
3) Clean tech
4) E-health
5) Market research
6) Bio tech (genetics, genomes)

There is certainly much more, so please keep adding to this list.

We'll exclude the well-known (may i say 'stodgy') employers:
1) Dell
2) State & Local government
3) Education
4) Big Semiconductor companies (and big companies in general)

I'm not aware of any formal support structure for most of what you listed.

The information technology areas need almost nothing except money. They don't need tax incentives. Office space is available, fast networks, and lots of talent in the area. I hear that VC or angel money is tight right now, but I contend innovation and entrepeneurship is alive and well in Austin for tech related fields.

I can't say anything credible about biotech.

You'd have far better luck with these business categories (and VC) in silicon valley.

Have lived for 7 years in Silicon Valley (during the go go years of the mid-90's), and an additional 5 years in So Cal. Yes, Apple, Cisco & Google got started there.

But the current economic climate in governator state is a bit umm, uneasy for any new startup. And oh, something about quality of life. Regardless of the VC investment trends, my money is on the creative class cities.

Hoping that this thread will become a repository for links, events and other related information.

Dallas actually may be a better city for bio tech. My sister may be able to tell me more info. She has done genetic research and currently is in cancer research in Dallas.
