Today while driving down 45th I witnessed yet another completely avoidable traffic accident. Three trucks in a row, all speeding, all tail-gating down the left lane. First one slows down and the two behind him slam into each other and then into the first one... thus blocking the whole lane. Luckily, I was in the right lane and didn't get stuck. This is becoming far too common as more and more people move here and drive however they wish. Grrr!

I agree, its absurd how closely people tailgate each other on the freeways, especially in the left lane. It seems like the faster they are going the more they tailgate. It's nuts. I have been making a concerted effort to stay out of the left lane unless I'm passing and to stay a safe distance behind any vehicle I'm following. Invariably someone will get right on my bumper behind me even though I'm driving the speed limit + 5 mph and I'm not in the fast lane.

I hate to say it but those sound like drivers from the north. It makes me crazy too when people tailgate when I'm going the speed limit. Here people think the fast lane is really go as fast as you want lane. What really gets me is when they start honking. I won't even get into the story about when this guy in one of those big SUV's was tailgating me and then bumped me while we were at the stop light. It isn't a nice story.

I've been in Austin every weekend this month (May), and on the freeways quite a bit (mainly 45, 183, Mopac, and 71) but I've not really noticed this, is it more of a weekday thing?

Now that you mention it, it does seem like its usually on weekdays when I notice it. Traffic is usually lighter and more easy going on weekends.

Something similar happened to me, only it was a guy behind me at a 4 way stop. It wasn't my turn to go, but he was impatient. I was driving an SUV, and he was driving a truck. Guess I could have put it in reverse and gone. As it was, I just sat there in disbelief, processing what just happened.

45th is a crazy road anyways. I'm surprised more people don't get side-swiped or smashed head-on with those crazy turns and narrow lanes.

capcat, I too sat there in disbelief trying to process what he was doing but I made the mistake of mouthing some not-so-nice words while doing that. Then I noticed that he seemed to have the ability to read lips, (I was looking at him in my mirror in shock) and there we were...lip reading some really bad things to each other. It went from bad to worse.

Thursday or Friday of this week, BRAND NEW white MB small SUV traveling south on Parmer...nearly plows through the THIRD car leaving on green from eastbound 620. She never blinked, never moved the phone from her ear, puts the Benz in reverse and acts like she never saw any of it!

Plenty of the above in Atlanta but this 35MPH on 183 and MoPac really IS an Austin thing from what I can see...haven't seen this in the 9 or 10 states I've driven in.

Actually the "muh" and "fuh" are pretty easy to read for even beginning lip readers...
