Has anyone had any experience staying in extended-stay hotels in Austin, or does anyone know of any extended-stay hotels that have excellent value?

On the low end Homestead Suites near 183 is inexpensive. The rooms are small though but the air conditioners arent too loud and the rooms have fresh paint and new furniture.
Mid range best is Candlewood suites. Comfortable and clean. Though the one I stayed at had loud air conditioners/heaters which can bother you if you're susceptible to noise at night.
Higher end Staybridge Suites is the best. Really nice all around.

Avoid like the plague the Crestwood Suites chain. Awful.
Also most of the Extended Stay America hotels in Austin are pretty awful.

I would think that location would be an important factor in making this decision. We once allowed relatives to take over our home during SXSW week and stayed at the old standby Heart of Texas motel. It isn't a chain but is family owned and gives attention that only an independent place can give. It's not fancy and lots of construction bosses put up their crews there. Remarkably, the guests seem to behave there better than do those at the chains.

Try Marriott Residence Inn South in Austin. It is a decent deal when you stay a least 40 days: $100 a night for a 2 BR 2 BA suite w/ kitchenette; you get free breakfast 7 days a week and dinner three nights. But be sure to account for occupancy taxes, in all of the hotels its around $15 a day.

$100 a night is WAY too expensive; I only need 1BR/1BA and I'm looking for about $30-$35 range per night, or around $800-$900 per month; I'll be working in South Austin for about 4-5 months and I'm checking to see if staying in an extended-stay hotel would be cheaper than renting an apartment, considering the extra expenses for that.

Homestead off 183 rents their smaller rooms for $650 month you could probably get a 2 room suite for $900 possibly. I personally prefer that hotel to other low end extended stay hotels because its balcony style. No loud hallways noises, no cooking smells wafting around the hall, and your car is usually close to your room.
Though personally wherever I was staying I'd want to stay a couple of nights before I committed to several months. Something simple like a very noisy air conditioners near where you sleep can make your stay miserable.

Is that right before the Mopac intersection near the Arboretum area? Yeah I've been looking and considering those; is it $650 a month for a furnished room with internet, cable, and all other needs?

It would also be about 15 miles from where I would be working. How is traffic along South I-35 at 6:45 AM, and along North I-35 around 4:15?

Orbius is right. I actually looked into a ton of long term housing hotels online in Austin and they all got horrible reviews it seemed online. I would get a furnished sublet if I were you. That's what I am going to do.

Where are you guys getting the rates that Homestead Suites is $650 a month? The one at the Aboretum is 900 a month for the cheapest room with the best available rate for 30 days (June 12-July 12). The one on South 1st is 1,350 for the same thing. I am interesting in knowing because if it is 650 a month, I think I might be better off doing that than subletting.

I used the official Homestead website.
