for the drill, I recommend getting the ryobi cordless kit at HD, get the Li-Ion one, a spare battery is always good to have as well.

A compact rechargeable electric screwdriver, with assorted drill bits and screw driver bits. This seems to be the thing I'm reaching for most often. If you have this you can get by without the more more expensive bulky rechargeable drill most of the time.

After this the most common tools I need are a pair of pliers and a crescent wrench.

And a plunger for the toilet. Get one of those accordian looking plastic ones, they work the best.

Since I supplement my regular furniture with cheap stuff from IKEA, I find a rubber handled allen (hex) key tool with multiple sizes comes in incredibly handy and saves your hands. Those all metal ones that come in the IKEA bag just don't cut it.

Don't forget a utility knife, too.

And I second the advice on splurging on a good powerful cordless drill. It was the first tool I bought post-house purchase and I've used it many, many times (including yesterday on a shelving unit).
