Do lilac bushes grow well around Austin and surrounding areas?

Thanks for the links. I was hoping someone either had one in their yard or knew of someone. Yes, I can go do a google search and if I don't I'm considered lazy. I was just putting the question out there to see of anyone could look out their window and see a lilac. I'm not trying to have a tone today but it comes out that way. And if you hear one in your head while reading my post I apologize. Difficult to communicate sometimes with typed words because I think we use our own data base to hear what is being said. And I don't know about you but sometimes the data base in my head is corrupt.

There are a couple pretty large lilac bushes along the town lake trail. They bloomed in mid-marchish? They were really fragrant and quite impressive.

Lilacs do well here, but maybe not the variety you are used to. We are area 8b if you want to do some research. Lots of fun opportunities for gardening here in the ATX!

The research I like to do is talk to other people that have things growing or not growing in their yard. I'm the type that never wanted to get the master gardener sticker because it took the fun out of it. I'm thinking I'll look for a garden group when I get there.

You'll find many groups to choose from, being outdoors is a great part of living in Austin...and learning to garden with drought and unbelievable highs is a happy challenge!
I only suggested our zone so that you could avoid expensive mistakes. You'll find lots of plants that are in no way suitable for 8b for sale in garden shops.

Ahhh, I found the garden forum!
I agree there are things I find for sale where I simply scratch my head. However, I will admit that two seasons ago now I found a cypress among the trees for a discount price! I thought, what the heck. I stuck it in the ground in the back where it's really wet and the darn thing is growing.
And thanks for the headsup with the 8b. I'm writing it down in my phone and address book now so I don't forget.

I am thinking that what we are calling lilacs are not what you are calling lilacs!!
Texas mountain laurel trees have heavy lilac-like blooms and perfume. I just saw a piece in the NYT about lilacs and it said that they like the cold! I have never seen trees like the ones pictured in Austin.

I could be wrong but I would bet money that we have a much different varietal here than what you are used to up north.
