It causes quite a bit of confusion to Canadians and Americans who always think WA = Washington. We've had mail and packages go astray because of that. So we've always written the state name in full ... Western Australia.

How big is state identity in australia? In canada province identity is often a dominating factor on politics.

The sheer distance between the States, and particularly the State capitals, ensures that state identity is a big deal.
Many people don't even get out of their own state on a regular basis.

There's already two Australian state's named after Queen Victoria. Re-naming SA after the current Queen "Elizabeth" wouldn't be very imaginative and naming it after the state's capital is just silly - or do we call it Adelaide City?

I'd agree with Danielsa, the only way to go would be to give it an Aboriginal name.

True, interstate rivalries are still quite strong though I'd argue the states which have population centres in relatively close proximity (eg. NSW v. Victoria) have stronger rivalries than say WA which seems to be an 'out of sight, out of mind' state.
