I'm planning to visit Australia in 2016, but I'm not sure if I want to do it in January or May. Which month do you consider to be the *perfect* weather? I'd like to avoid hurricane/cyclone season (if possible)
The official cyclone season is November-April. But I've been in both January and August, as well as other times of the year, and have not run into a lot of bad weather.
Part of it also has to do with what you want to do. If you want to go to the Outback, the height of summer isn't the best time to go. October-November is supposed to be the best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef. If you're just visiting the big cities, almost any time is good. Though, all things being equal, I'd go with spring or fall, as Sydney and Melbourne can get hot in the summer and Melbourne can be grey in winter.
Which parts of the country are you planning on visiting? Are your only choices Jan and May? In the Southern half "wintery" weather goes from roughly easter to early October. The quotes are because winter in Australia is probably not what you'd call winter, but it tends to rain and you'd want a warm fleece. Jan and Feb are uncomfortably hot. I would go March April Oct or Nov. (flights are expensive in Dec). But if you'll primarily be up north, the seasons are different.
There's a group of us going & we're still developing our "must see" list. Heck, we're still discussing how long we're going to be there I know I'm going to see Steve Irwin's zoo; I'm sure we'll be visiting the Great Barrier Reef; there might be some who are interested in seeing Uluru; and Sydney.
We're not set on a date quite yet, January & May have been discussed.

Early October would be good for all of those places, start in the north and then work way down south.
Holy cow! I knew Australia was big, but DANG!! I just googled distances....30 hrs from Sydney to Uluru; 8 hrs Sydney to Melbourne; 10 hrs Sydney to Brisbane; 23 hrs from Sydney to Townsville. I'm thinking we'll have to make MULTIPLE trips to fit it all in!!
I'll suggest October to the group & see what happens from there. Thanks!!
It's not 30 hours from Sydney to Uluru, you'd fly. If you drove it would be, what, three days? Cut across to Pt Augusta then up? Sames goes for Sydney to Townsville. There is a road connecting those two, at least.
I assume you'd be flying from city to city, not driving, unless you have a lot of time to spend in Oz. So it would only be about an hour or so from Sydney to Melbourne. And there's an airport near Uluru so you can fly there in no time from the major cities in Australia.
