Hello, this question is for the people who live in Darwin or have lived there in the recent years.
I'm a 22 years old guy and i live in Italy. The job situation here in Italy is a complete mess right now. I'm jobless and finding occupation is very hard in this country if you don't know the right people and don't have the "right friends".
i've been planning my expat since i was 20 y/o and i think i came to the conclusion that the right city / country for my future is Darwin Australia.
What i'm looking for is:
- english speaking country
- no cold months
- plenty of jobs for everyone
- good air quality
Is it true that finding a job in Darwin is REALLY easy? i'm mostly interested in manual and physical jobs.
Darwin is ranked everywhere as one of the cities with the cleanest air in the world. But how is it possible if everyone uses the car there?
I left the Northern Territory in 2007, plus I worked for a national organisation which sent me there, so I can't really comment on the state of the job market.
First, you need to check whether you will qualify for immigration. Australia uses a points-based system. Your youth and willingness to go to a remote location will be points in your favour. You don't list any qualifications, and you are considering unskilled labour, which suggests no qualifications, which would count against you. On this basis you would also be unlikely to qualify for a 457 visa. You might like to check if Italy has a working holiday arrangement with Australia.
Seasonal fruit-picking work always seemed to be short on labour but it's highly seasonal and by all accounts quite unpleasant.
I have not previously heard that Darwin has exceptionally clean air but I can think of a couple of factors that would contribute. Firstly, while it is true that public transport is not especially extensive, Darwin has a small population and covers a small area. So while everyone drives everywhere, there aren't really many cars on the few roads, they are not stuck in traffic jams, and they are going relatively short distances. Secondly, the prevailing weather conditions would generally not be conducive to retaining pollution - most of the time it would easily disperse or be transported away from the city.
Darwin probably has great air quality because it's only got a population of 127,000 and the nearest big city is in Indonesia. Personally, I find the humidity of the wet season in a tropical climate makes it hard to breathe.
From what I've researched before, Darwin is not any sort of boomtown. Most of the immigrants to go Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane because most of the jobs are there. Zar91, you don't have any skills, and the days of Italians going to Australia easily to find work is over. Find out if Italy has a Working Holiday program available for Italians. Another option would be seasonal work, but that is short term and you must return to Italy when the season is over. those kinds of jobs would be in New South Wales during the summer, though. So you wouldn't be there for winter.

Darwin is a mining and military town. It's not really a city having a population of ~130k, in fact the whole of the Northern Territory, an area 4.5x the size of Italy only has a population of ~230k. I think you need to be a bit realistic about there being "jobs for everyone". In such a small town, the workforce will be highly specialised, ie if you're not there to work in mining or the military you'll be out of luck. Have you checked what visa you can get? Without a degree, you're likely only eligible for a WHV which means you'll have the same problem in 12 months time, unless you can find a sponsor.
I'm not sure how you define cold, but really, with the possible exception of Canberra and Tasmania, no city in Australia gets close to being Europe cold during winter.
By world standards, every Australian city has good air quality. Aside from smoke during bushfire season, I can't think of the last time Sydney had a smog problem.
