Anyone heard the story of the trysting couple found dead by the Lane Cove River in the early 1960s?

No, I had not ever heard of it but curiosity led me to the Wikipedia article. I'm surprised there wasn't a movie made.

Bogle–Chandler case

The location where the couple had sought privacy was at water-level in a slight depression, surrounded by a bank and mangroves, typical of where the heavier-than-air hydrogen sulphide would accumulate in calm conditions.

The Wikipedia article gives a good summary but it really doesn't convey that prior to the Peter Butt documentary the H2S theory was no more prominent than any of the others. I think the Somerton Man is far mysterious though.

I know, right? A good mystery is hard to beat.

I had only been in Australia with my mom and younger sister a few months before the Bogle-Chandler Case hit the headlines in the early 1960's. It was absolutely fascinating stuff and still remains so. Several years ago the case was revisited and the theory was that some kind of 'swamp gas' or the like had emitted a poison that affected and eventually killed the pair. Still, that would not explain why Ms. Chandlers body was covered with cardboard boxes and Bogle pretty much naked other than his clothes laid on top of him as well as WHY they were there in the first place! Both were discovered in different locations.

Again fascinating stuff!

Not something I had ever heard of, unlike unsolved true crimes- like the Beaumont children and the Wanda Beach murders - both in the 1960's as well.
Very interesting mystery, thanks for bringing it to our attention!

The Wikipedia article answers those questions.
The situation was like a story from the Old Testament.
Is Lane Cove a popular spot for family gatherings?
