Driverless race cars? (motor, electric, engines, exhaust)

Saw an article on the news the other day on driverless race cars and got to thinking would people actually go see races with driverless cars? Roborace reveals the world's first DRIVERLESS racing car | Daily Mail Online

I saw that as well. I can't imagine what the point is. The human element is what makes racing interesting.

I don't think that "driver less " is going to be a hit.....


But I would like to see an electric race car series. No fuel, no exhaust fumes, no noise.


Electric motors have a few differences, compared to combustion engines. Instant and complete full power at the start , and with correct gearing they are as fast or faster than the same car with a conventional engine. Engine placement is a way to achieve a weight to power ratio and a left side weight balance , especially in oval track racing.


Will it happen ? Probably not in the US, but in other parts of the world, ?

exactly right. if you want to watch "driver less" cars, go to your local RC track and watch them and tell me how much fun that is.

Then what's the point? I tried watching a few Formula E races and gave up. The cars are ugly, driven by wankers who don't want to race in Indycars. What little noise they made was annoying. Part of the allure of motor racing has been the aural pleasure that a race engine makes (with the exception of Mazda's 4 rotor wankel... That was ear splitting...)



That is what motor racing should sound like.

Formula E is a social/science experiment. Racing for trendy, bearded hipsters.

I dunno, they may find a niche. Either pit companies versus one another or countries. The latter would pull the patriotic hear strings of a lot of people. It doesn't have to replace racing with live driver's altogether.

They tried that already with A1GP. Didn't work.
