Economizing is like providing charity for the poor and needy; it's a wonderful thing, but it has to be done as a personal decision made from free will. If it's a decision forced upon you, then it's completely miserable, and breeds extreme contempt for what should have been a good cause.

I think the op thinks that large HP and displacement engines are inefficient and wasteful, While his logic is sound there are way more ways resources in general are being wasted,my view is basically a continuation of the logic behind the quote,if you want to waste your money on large inefficient vehicles go right ahead its your money,

Getting the size of the Federal Government under control, is not the answer to a Value Added Tax. What federal taxes don't cover , the States will just make up the difference.... We have way too many people, way too much aging infrastructure, way too much special interest and Lobby on their behalf.
I am calling for a fair taxing structure along with a level playing field for small business and for the people as a whole.... The Country will not run forever pushing the blame on the people and social services. Big Business must be made to pay their fair share, along with the people on the street.
Food and needed services to survive must be exempted in a fair VAT. There has to be a way to fix the Country thats falling apart...without going deeper into debt and a devalued dollar. I just don't see anyother way with the system we have and the mess we have gotten into, and still try to maintain a standard of living we are all used to living.

a VAT would totally cramp our standard of living, especially for the working class.

It's the same as a sales tax, but is assessed in steps instead of all at once.

Personally, I'm all in favor of a sales tax, taxing consumption instead of days of your life spent at work. At least, a person who works hard and produces can choose to be a tax protester by not buying anything.
