I think the difference is that most people assume there is a lot of wiggle room with the advertised price of a car.

There can be when I know the exact price a dealer paid at Manhiem. I did on my prior car, dealer tried adding $10K onto auction price. The price they were asking was too high to start for similar ones. I got $4k off, but I also learned I should have not purchased it at all. So, them making $2-6k off of me after dropping price/shipping from auction/anything they had to do to it worked for them.

Those are not comparable. That's large volume big retail with thin margins and very low cost products that wouldn't be worth anyone's time to negotiate over. A car is a huge $$ purchase in comparison. That's why a commissioned salesmen doesn't spend 2 hours selling you a slim jim or a detergent bottle.
