I am looking at used cars and am considering a manual 2009 Chevy Aveo with 20,000.

Anyone have experience with Aveo's?

Also, this would be my first vehicle purchase, just graduating college.

I don't, but a friend bought her daughter one about 4 years ago when she went to college, and she's still driving it. I drove it from Michigan to West Virginia and backa couple of years ago (was also a 5-speed) and was quite impressed with how zippy and smooth it was for a small car.

One of my friends has one, she likes it. Have another friend that had one - timing belt broke at 54K and ruined the engine.

Econonical, but if you are looking for safety, look elsewhere.

They do get really good ratings in NHTSAs full-frontal crash - 5 stars for driver and 4 for passenger, but the IIHS off-set crash wasnt as good. It only earned an acceptable overall rating and only acceptable for the passenger cage strength... which is not good for a small car.

NHTSA test;

2009 Chevrolet Aveo 4-DR. w/SAB | Safercar -- NHTSA

IIHS off-set test;

IIHS-HLDI: Chevrolet Aveo

Not bad, there have been much worse out there tested over the years... but the passenger cage is starting to collapse here and this is like hitting another small car. The pic of the off-set crashed car may not work at times, IIHS seems to be having some issues at this moment.

I've read about the drive train issue on Aveos. That's been my chief concern, most small cars are unsafe anyway so I'm taking my chances with that. I soo wish they were still making the 2011 Hyundai accent.

As you are in the market for small economy car you may also want to give Toyota Echo or Toyota Yaris a look at as they are bulletproof reliable,have a timing chain that will outlast the life of the car and they get mpg figures of 35-45mpg,
Toyota Corolla is another worthy used car.

So I ended up buying a 2009 Aveo Sedan with 12,045 miles for just under $10,000. I think it was a sweet deal, there was no accident damage either. I hope I'm not dissapointed, I've read some terrible reviews of the car.

You may take solace in the fact that Daewoo--with GM's help--has recycled that platform into something that looks a little fresher (for what it is) than the old 80's FWD Pontiac Lemans (and clones) that it originated from.

That counts for something...I guess.

My aunt had an Aveo....was a nice car, and I rode in it a few times, but was a bit small for me (i'm 6'1). Unfortunately she had an accident in it (wasn't her fault) but the car wasn't the same afterward, kept giving her problems. Eventually had to trade it in for something else.

But don't let that dissuade you though, its a decent car with fairly good fuel economy.

amIayankee, my concern would be a manual transmission in Dade/Broward Counties. I'm thinkin' BIG time "clutch leg" in all that traffic... And it's not like South FL has any hills where you could really exercise that gear box, either...
