It depends on your state/how the judge is feeling that day. I've heard of convictions being overturned on appeal on the basis that a parking lot is private property.

All cars require current registration and insurance in the State of Alabama. A police officer is able to legally enter private property to check the expiration stickers on an automotive tag. The state may also send out a letter requesting proof of insurance on a registered vehicle and administer a ticket/court date if the insurance in not current. All vehicles in the Alabama must be in good running order to prevent a breeding ground for insects and rodents.
