It must be safe for my 18 month old daughter.

I recently sold my 01 Ford Escape and I need something reliable under $5000 if I pay cash and under $10000 if I finance. I would prefer to just pay cash and not have a payment.

What kind of cars do you recommend?

Thanks

Go to your local municipal, county or state fleet auction and buy her a de-commissioned police car. The day before they were de-commissioned they were safe to drive at high speeds in chase circumstances, were well maintained and nothing is safer than a 2004 Crown Vic for under $5000. Here they sell to the cabbies for 2500-5000. They are decommissioned as police vehicles at 140,000.

Here is what they look like here:

I'd rather buy a civic, but I can see how those cars might have a lot going for them. cheap parts means cheap to fix (for both).

I need something good in the snow - so I dont know if a rear wheel drive ex police will be good.

That's a decent recommendation, hard to beat the value on those (ex cop cars). In most cases when you are shopping at the price point, it doesn't matter what anyone recommends, its more about seeing what is out there in your area and then picking the best car out of what's available.

Put 10 bags of play sand in the trunk and 4 snow tires on the car and it will be better in the snow than an AWD Suv with street tires. It has a limited slip rear axle (police equipment). You are not getting a Suburu for under $5000 unless it comes in a box.

A $5000 civic, Rav4, etc will also be a POS. And, if she is unlucky enough to get hit in one of those roller skates, you will wish she was in a Crown Vic.

A Honda Accord or Camry is a reasonable car, but at $5000 you are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I would check an 98-02 Honda Accord. I have an 01 Honda which is my first car still running strong at 122k.

Cheap.... reliable.. and good in snow. Sounds like you need a Jeep Cherokee to me.

The 4.0 liter 6 cylinder is a great engine, either transmission found behind the 6 cylinder (AW4 Auto, or AX15 Manual) is strong. The 4wd systems are strong. Most anything on them is fairly easy to fix and can be done if you have some mechanical ability and a average tool set (socks, open/box end wrenches, screw drivers, etc).

Decently maintained they can go for a long time and it is not uncommon to see them nearing 300K miles or more. All vehicles have their own problems and I would recommend looking around a few a bit on xjTalk Jeep Cherokee Forum. Here is a good thread to start with, What to look out for when buying a XJ. - Jeep Cherokee Forum xjTalk . I go by the same user name over there so if you decide to sign up use me as a referral and be sure to say hi.

One would have to agree with this ^^^^^.

Good XJ's are getting a little hard to find around here, but certainly would do the job and come in well under the budget.

OP, if you find a good XJ be sure to road test for death wobble. This is a design related malfunction that affects an increasingly high number of XJ's as suspension parts wear out. A good mechanic with knowledge of the problem should test out the rig for you.

I got a 2010 Ford Fusion from a dealer auction near where I live for $3.5K. It had 60K miles on it though; it was a rental car previously. There are tons of good cars on auction, go check them out.
