I do allot of driving, about 40k or better a year. I was trading every two years but always being upside down when it comes to the trade.
Why not start swapping cars every 5 years instead of every 2 years as most modern cars can go well over 200,000 miles with proper maintenance(Fords are not recommended for high mileage as they fall to pieces before the 200K mark). Not sure why it has to be an SUV when something like a Toyota Corolla has a very large trunk and can achieve close to 40 mpg on the highway and can be had for under $20K.

I don't think Corolla's get mileage like that anymore... I may be wrong but last time I checked they're in the mid 30s HWY miles which is pretty disappointing.
My personal favorite is the Mazda 3 hatchback with the SKYACTIVE engine which gets 40 MPG for right around $20K ....

Ford has one of the highest quality ratings in the industry right now, why would they not go 200K miles with proper maintenance?!
If you're getting a small SUV, I'd definitely say either an Escape Hybrid or GMC Terrain. Both would probably be good for your wants/needs, would be priced right in your budget, and come with all the amenities one would probably want traveling those miles.
If you aren't completely opposed to a car, I can think of several nice midsize/large sedans that would definitely make the trips in comfort. Maybe something like a Nissan Maxima or Buick Lacrosse? Both would be great and would go 100K+ with little maintenance.

WHY would someone want to travel 40K miles each year in one of those tiny, cramped Toyotas?! Seriously! If anyone is putting those kind of miles on, you would think they'd probably want something big and comfortable to eat up the highway in. The last thing I'd recommend in a small car for those type of drivers!
Thanks everyone for the great advice. Yes there is a gas card as well as a car allowance. I had a 2010 Highlander but hated it...When I stepped on the gas the front end went everywhere but straight and uncomfortable as far as seat adjustments.
Anyhow, I initially thought about a new Camry but wasn't sure how the new ones hold up. I think what it comes down to...is putting a larger down payment out or at least more than a couple grand, I had the HighLander for a year, Car Max gave me the best price of $10,500, it was maticulas, had 42k and I still had to come out of pocket $8700 when I turned it in.

Either it was in awful condition, or Carmax doubled their money on that vehicle without even trying.
2010 Highlander with 42k miles, trade in value of $10,500? That doesn't add up.
Yeah... something stinks here like a dead fish!!
