We had a 2007 S4 4.2 V8. Excellent driver's car, and very quick, but I don't know if I'd buy one for drag racing. It's almost a waste of the car, IMO. It pulls like a freight train in any gear. But it's not the fastest thing out there. That said, there are some people who have built them into seriously fast cars. If you look for videos on youtube, there are some. Could be a good place to start at least gathering ideas about what to do to the car.

The cost is may be another factor. Not so much the purchase price, which is still expensive, but the cost of the crap you are eventually going to break. It's a very strong car, but hammering on it at a drag strip is going to break things, eventually. Expensive things.

I'd definitely agree that it's a stylish ride and has all the nice amenities. Damn, thinking back to it, I want another one.

Buy the car that is the cheapest to fix! Hotrods of any brand are constantly blowing up so atleast pick one you can afford to fix.

When you spend 10 hours a day wrenching on some one elses car, your not going to want to do anything to yours.

VW/Audi = expensive over rated junk that requires WorldPac on speed dial.

This is why my mechanic leases an Infiniti.

Veyron, I think you are making a poor choice if your goal is to beat these guys at the drag strip. Stock for stock either a B6 or B7 4.2L S4 is going to stomped by any of them with the closest race being with the WRX, but let's be serious, how many stock WRX's are there. The best times pulled out of a B7 S4 stock are in the 13.6 range and the B6 is in the 13.9 range. They are great cars overall and fun to drive, but they aren't hard edged performance cars.

You can pickup a couple tenths with tuning and exhaust work, but that will easily set you back about $3k-$4k and not get you much for your performance dollar. The only real way to add power is with a supercharger, but while there are quite a few out there running them most of the kits cost around $10k and the tuning is a major PITA. Even with a supercharger, most guys are barely scraping into the high 12's, which still puts you behind the stock M3 and Vette, may give you the edge over a stock Evo and would let you beat the WRX. Still, totally not worth the money if the ultimate plan is to drag race the car.

Even the older twin turbo 2.7L S4's were never very good drag cars. AWE Tuning has one that managed high 11's, but the car had well over $25k of work into it and was completely gutted. So, the S4 is a good car and fun to drive, but it's not a drag car by any stretch.

B5 (2000-2002) = 2.7L twin turbo V6. They made around 250 hp.

B6 (2004-2005) = 4.2L V8, naturally aspirated. They made around 340 hp.

B7 (2006-2008) = 4.2L V8, naturally aspirated. They made around 340 hp.

B8 (2009-present) = 3.0L supercharged, direct injected V6. They make around 330 hp.

Now, the S5 from 2007-2012 used the same basic 4.2L that was in the S4, but it had direct injection which gave it an extra 10 or so hp. As of 2013MY the S5 has switched to the same 3.0L V6 that is in the current S4.

You have a point. I will have to sacrifice the luxury part for now and get a car meant strictly for performance.

5-6 grand is not going to be enough to beat any of those cars except maybe the Maxima.
