I'm a 63-year old working adult, probably more technology-savvy than most. My automotive experience revolves mostly around "disposable cars" -- commonly-known compact models produed in large numbers with which independent mechanics are likely to be familiar, I usually get 100-140,000 miles of use before trade-in.

But the increasing volatility of fuel prices and, more unsettling, fuel supplies, is causing me to consider a used hybrid as my next set of wheels, which probably won'y be needed until next spring. I commute to work on a weekly basis (about 60 miles one-way) and average about 300 miles per week, down from 500-600 when I was younger. Both of the communities in which I live are semi-rural or "exurban" and offer very limited public transportation, but I seldom leave the area for trips of 100 miles or more and use "park-and-ride" when visiting New York or Phillly.

Any observations, comments or advice?

It's really no different then buying any other car. Assuming your ownership period is the same 100k-140k it traditionally is, there is no reason not to select a hybrid. The chances you would have any issues with the battery or hybrid system at that age/mileage is less then the chance of developing a major engine issue with a regular car at those mileages. If you were looking to keep this well past 150k miles, then the expected battery life would be more of a concern, but even in the event of needing a battery replacement, the cost is similar to replacing an engine with a remanned unit.

Yes, someone needs to buy used hybrids (and within reach / economics of more folks). Do extra research and due diligence. I prefer to buy One-owner FS By-owner. I would add a level of techno evaluation for those items more susceptable to fail in a Hybrid, AND get advice from EXPERIENCED buyers of used Hybrids.

For me.... Commuting... I would use a Diesel VW so not be dependent on OPEC / Dino fuel. (In higher traffic, probably a Jetta Wagon for increased safety; side curtain AB...). My B4 Passats (96 & 97) get 52 mpg and have 25g tanks, thus I only need to fill every 1200+ miles. I have seen them run well past 500k miles.

I have MANY older VW diesels (~44-50 mpg). They go well past 300k without significant work required. I have bought many for under $100. and some for free (from Neighbor's brier patch).

50 mpg since 1976, Where have you Been?... No Dinosaurs, OPEC, or toxic Batteries required.

VERY low ECO footprint 'rescuing' a 35 yr old car. They are Just fine by me... I travel ~ 20-50k / yr. Never been towed in 3 mil fleet miles. Never been to a 'fixit shop / or dealer'. I do my own work, You can buy MUCH for a diesel VW for ~$10.00 or less (last radiator hose cost me $2.35). They Cost about $300/ 100,000 miles for Maint.
