Two floors, 800 parking spaces. Iirc, each floor is 20,000 sq. ft. (I work here). We have carbon monoxide detectors as well.

My vehicle parks rear-in up against a wall that does not have any windows, but while it was idling I couldn't smell anything. 2007 Ford Focus burns clean.

OK, I was just getting a little concerned about the carbon monoxide, that seems OK.

I live out of town, and this smell, or something close to it, comes from all petrol engined cars that have not been driven far enough for the cat to warm up yet. I only point out that I'm out of town, because the air is quite clean, and the smells are noticeable. I think it's a normal smell.

Well... Guess what it was, all?

I had a can of engine starter fluid from when we had a 1990 Jeep two years ago. Well, when I put the jack and spare tire back into the trunk after the oil change, the can must have gotten wedged somehow to where it was spraying. I opened the trunk today after remembering that it was back there, and experienced a full-frontal attack of the odor.

And now it's gone.

I would guess that jamming a rag up the exhaust in an effort to stall the engine might do serious harm to the cat converter....but what do I know?

If exhaust system connections come off a little bit, or during installation it wasn't installed perfectly and there is some gap, will you hear it easily or no sound difference?

Any loose exhaust fitting between motor and muffler will be noticeable via the sound while after the muffler or cat conv a slight sound might be heard
Mufflers are the sound reducers.
Sounds will vary...legal or otherwise.
