Amen Most people run their fogs because they think it looks super cool... they are wrong.
I run my fogs because they light the side of the road and allow me to see better, not because they "look cool" I have a bigger problem with people who don't have their lights aimed properly.
Fog lights are great......IN FOG. Otherwise they are an annoyance and hazard to other drivers on the road.
Fog lights, properly aimed (i.e. factory ones, especially since they are usually fixed) cannot be an annoyance or hazard to others, as they don't shine upwards at all. They spread out low, that's the point. If you are getting annoyed by a set, then they are driving lights or they are misaimed due to being aftermarket and poorly installed or due to crash damage.
I LOVE the sanctimonious overreacting by people on this board.
I dont use headlights till its dark enough. Fog lights; some come on automatically and you dont need them in clear weather you shouldnt be looking that close to your car anyway.

Fog lights fill in teh areas in front and to the sides that headlights don't get clearly, helping see obstacles or things getting ready to dart in from the sides, or crumbly potholed road edges that headlights don't really light up far down the road (especially when going around a corner). I really don't think you understand how helpful it is.
I was going to refer daniel sterns website but rhe faq is down. Basically, fog lights are to fill that dark spot between thr headlights and car. You dont need to br looking ybat close yo your car, you need to be looki.g down the road ahead of the car.
Our Buick handles all the lighting for us. Once the key in the ignition, all that stuff is taken care of. Even turning on the lights with the wipers.
I've wondered about that. Lights on in rain is a law these days in a number of states (including here in PA as well). Although how it distinguishes between just wiping the windshield for a sec and having the wipers on would be a good trick. I was driving a Chevy Cruze as a rental over the past several days and don't think it's auto lights are that sophisticated. I think in general the basic auto headlight systems just assume that the DRLs are enough to cover the rain bit. Although that doesn't really fit when the DRLs are not the headlights.
I'm still not a fan of abdicating all responsibility for this to something automatic as so many people appear to have done. I can only assume that this is the case for most of the idiots driving with no lights at all when it's REALLY pouring and thus very dark gray but still "daytime".

You need to be looking both places. Not only that, but looking to the sides and behind you.
