Hey folks, sold the wife's car faster than anticipated. We have been looking for used SUV's above and now have to go car shopping. We will buy used at least 2-3 years old. Must have awd capabilities and 6 cyl. motors. We like both cars. Have had Toyotas before that run forever, but think Hondas will do the same. Which car would you recommend, year and trim package. Was there a bad year or years for either of these two cars? We are scouring the cars sites now to go out and get a car soon. Any feedback on either of these two is needed. Thank you! Kind of like the roomier pilot, but the Toyota gets better gas mileage.

Was there 6 months ago. Looked at the Pilot, the eco mode vibration was noticeable during the drive and annoying to me. The HL V6 has good get up and go, some torque steer. I did not like the 2nd row, only room for tow passengers and the third row was tight. Either one should be reliable in the long run. In our neck of the woods, the CPO 2-3 year old Honda and Toyota's were selling close to the new price. I test drove the Mazda CX-9 and fell in love with their handling. We got a good deal on a 2010 with 23K miles on it. The Mazda AWD might have some issues though, ours is FWD.

we have an '11 Pilot EX 4wd (awd) and love it. MPG's in the 20-23 range depending on driving (23 is about the best we've gotten, 20-21 more normal), it was able to pull our Ranger boat well enough, and is comfortable on our trips back to WI with plenty of room for us and our goodies. The awd works great in snow (no, not here in SC lol), we got around in a 20" storm last Dec in WI, and made it just fine driving thru IN the day after Christmas in their little blizzard.
I do notice the eco mode but after the couple years dont pay attn to it anymore. No issues with it, except the couple belt/airbag recalls that had to be checked (one item replaced, the other didnt require it).

I'd go for the Pilot, hands down. ONLY thing with the Pilot is you MUST do oil changes at 5000 miles if you use conventional OR stick to 7500 with synthetic. The VCM system causes problems on extended drain intervals.

Every time I look at Toyota's options and packages, it gives me a headache.
Just based on that alone, I would go with a Pilot

I guess what I am trying to say is that you really can't go wrong with either cars. They are both good cars.

I think both are good cars. The Pilot is a bit easier to buy because of Toyota's options. I would go new. They hold their value really well and thus aren't a good buy used.

Do you have some data to back this up?

We have a 2006 Pilot, now with almost 140K nearly flawless miles. I change the oil when the maintenance minder says to (usually around 5-10% oil life left). This car has VCM.

There's a few cases of it with Pilots and other VCM-equipped hondas. They sludge up one bank and wear out the camshaft. What do you use for oil?

If you're not using the cheapest possible no-name oil it should be fine.

I conduct a car reliability survey, and haven't come across the oil sludging problem with VCM before. Will keep an eye out for reports now. But it's probably not common, at least not yet.

Do test drive them extensively, esp the Honda to see if you mind the VCM (when it runs on 3-4 cylinders).

The Mazda CX-9 might also be worth a look.

Reliability stats for it can be found here:
