I just replaced an older Garmin that was great but had old maps with a newer one that has lifetime maps... it was more cost effective than paying for a map update.
I find most GPS systems to be extremely useful but the traffic feeds and suggestions are not really effective in many areas. I have used many and for my purposes a low cost unit with lifetime maps is the best option.
I've used both the phone GPS apps and the standalone, and honestly, I prefer the standalone GPS.
I currently have the nuvi 3590 that I bought for $250 at Costco. Lifetime maps, lifetime traffic, and a nice 5" screen. I've had Garmins for the better part of about 8 years, and travel a lot with them. They've always been good for me.
Any Veizon android smartphone. It works better than any of the stand alone GPS devices I have seen. The maps are more accurate and up to date. There are errors, but fewer than with Garmin Tomtom or Magellan. Maps are always updated automatically and you pay nothing for any of it except the smart phone and data subscription which you probably want/have anyway.
I have a Galaxy Note 2 which is easily as big or bigger than any GPS thingy, plus you can use the phone and navigate at the same time. The directions talk over your phone conversation, so you do not miss an exit. The best part for me is I can simply tap an E-mailed address or a calender entry from my outlook calender (or a text) and it automatically guides me to the address. No input necessary.
