A fellow came into the store the other day and I commented on his big Dodge Ram pickup. He said that he 350,000 miles on the truck, with the same motor and same transmission. Do any of you have cars or trucks with over 250,000 miles; without a motor or transmission overhaul?

I've had several go well over 300k. I had a '90 Olds Cutlass Supreme that, had it not rusted out and gotten hit, might still be running today. All original drivetrain, and had about 320k when the accident put it to rest. My wife drove a VW Golf that we ran up over 350k.

Some cars will never go that high, but even those that will require good maintenance to do so.

My 2001 Jetta is right at 250k. I've done a couple timing belts and water pumps, replaced the hydraulic lifters as preventative recently (they supposedly start to fail in the 250k range) as well as some top-end camshaft seals. Original trans, original clutch. The only "major" replacement was the alternator at 220k.

I expect we'll see the car to over 350k miles unless it's claimed by an accident. Just nothing wrong with it, super low maintenance needs, and can't complain about the 48mpg (yeah, it's the diesel). Not too sure about longer than that, I expect we'll be tired of the car in the next 5~8 years and have dropped our number of annual miles to nearly half of what we used to do.

2000 grand am is approaching 150k. Replaced spark plugs and wires myself for first time yesterday (it was done 6 years ago as well). Going to replace gas tank filler neck which is likely throwing a code due to corrosion. Going to replace 02 sensors just because they are original to the car. Also PCV valve because it's original and cheap part. It has a negative long term TRIM reading when hooking up torque of about -10 to -15% but drives fine otherwise. Going to narrow down the cause of that though. Intake gasket has been leaking externally for 7 or so years now. Local mechanic says don't worry about it.

Replaced power window motors, steering blinker switches myself over the years.. again cheap to do. Power door lock on passenger side is out and I just left it and use manual lock. This car gets bad reviews on reliability but has done well enough for me. Going to try to drop the pan and change the transmission fluid and filter myself before winter.

That's really amazing. I got 165k on my clutch which I still thought was damn good, but the over 200k is really impressive. A little more highway driving than I've done, I'm guessing. I have a 2000 Integra and I'm "only" coming up on 220k.

My Tacoma is at 176K. That's anew record for me as I like to swap cars at least once a year.

My old boss had a 4 cyl Camry with 406K on it when it was T-Boned

We did. We had 94 Expo LRV that we lost track of mileage, as I drove her for 2 years with speedo disconnected, but by the time we parted, she had 268 000 miles on ticker. Outside of regular maintenance, I had distributor cap and rotor replaced, and a/c clutch bearing. That was one of our all time beloved cars.
Son had 94 Eclipse, same situation with speedo, that got him from 146 000 miles when we bought her into around 300 000. We did clutch, belt, and some minor stuff, which is routine maintenance anyway.

Not sure what's the point of your thread is though.

You know, I am tired of all that "good engine" thing. Large V8s and even V6-s usually run half steam anyway, not really breaking down. That does not determine reliability of a vehicle somehow. So what you had same engine for 300 000 miles? What ELSE did you have to repair?
It's like my Silverado. 5.3L Vortec was still humming like a Swiss watch at 144 000 miles. But THE REST of it, outside epower train, was a DIY exercise every several months. So why bother with engine/transmission?

My '85 Toyota Corolla stick-shift 5-door had 260K on it when I was moving out of the country, and I couldn't even get anybody from an ad to come and look at it when I told them the mileage, but six years old it was still like new, clean and mechanical. So I gave it to my girl friend's daughter, who took it to Arizona, and eight years later, I heard that it was still running.

A couple of years ago, I had a '93 Toyota Previa with 230K, which I gave away to someone who could do the needed work himself and give it a good home.

I bet I would still be driving my 87 5.0 LX Mustang if I had not blown the motor at 306,8xx miles a couple of years ago. I ran Seafoam through the intake, and didn't change the oil soon afterwards like I usually did. I'm sure the oil pump intake clogged up, oil pressure fell, and the crank broke as a result. Never opened up the motor past the valve cover gaskets and water pump, but I did replace the transmission once, and rebuilt it another time, along with a slew of clutches (from driving 30 miles a day in city traffic). I need to get it back on the road this fall.......
