My niece and I just flew out to visit a sick relative in Illinois. We paid the rental car agency in advance for a tank of gas so we wouldn't have to try to pump our own before returning it!

My Texas mom never knew how to pump gas into a car. However, she was born in 1917. She didn't drive either.

The last time I pumped gas, I was sixteen (1954) and you turned a crank. It was a private pump on a business site out in the country. That is the one and only time I have ever been in a no-service situation.

ON a slightly different tangent..............

When I was a commercial expedite driver, based in Toronto, but delivering all over the USA, with emergency parts for stranded air craft....... I was amazed at the number of idiots that used their gas cap to HOLD OPEN the gas pump handle . Talk about dangerous behaviour !!

Or the ones who think it is cute to let their 10 year old pump gas while THEY go into the store, to buy
stuff ?? When I saw that I was out of there, fast.

How about this idea, for increased employment, in your country....... Make all gas stations " attendant only service " ? That would sure help the unemployed young people, who can't get a job, it seems to me.

Jim B.

Toronto.

That would certainly be bucking the trend. In the U.S., the trend toward self-service and automation began years before even I was born in the 1940s.

It's the self check-outs at grocery stores that kill me but I keep being told I'm just old and need to adapt.

At the time I hadn't come across a pump that required you to swipe your card. We do have them now.
That also varies from state to state or pump to pump. In Massachusetts you aren't allowed to let it autofill. They cut the tabs off the pump handles to prevent people from doing this (but many people stick a pack of cigarettes or a bottle cap in the handle to get around this). Also in many rural areas, the gas stations still only have 2 pumps and no credit card machines.

I bought gas in Canada once, and there was no automatic shutoff on the nozzle. I pumped a pretty good puddle onto the ground before I noticed.

I don't use them and I think anyone who does should get a discount on their bill since they did the work themselves!
