Symptoms: My 1991 Camry take about 5 tries to start. When started it does fine when gas is pressed too much but always dies during acceleration or hill climbing. When you let off the gas it will kick hard as the unburned fuel is finally ignited.

Is it a bad spark plug wire or something else?

Could be, or could be a weak fuel pump.

Also replace your spark plugs, change air filter, etc. Is your check engine light illuminated?

Clean the throttle body, inspect and/or replace the wires, distributor cap, rotor and sparkplugs and replace the fuel filter. Also dump in your next fill up a Lucas Fuel Injector cleaner.

Do, or have done, a proper tuneup and take care of your deferred maintenance items - plugs, fuel filter, O2 sensor, etc. If you have put this off for a long time you'll have a pretty long list and this won't be cheap - but it's money you have to spend one way or the other.

Make sure your battery connections are "tight and bright" and check engine-to-body grounds, make sure they are good, too. These are more critical in modern (mid 80's and newer) cars than on old rigs.

If you have a CEL, read the code, take care of the problem. You may have codes stored even though the CEL is not on or at least not on all the time. A decent shop will look for these codes without being told to do so.

I'd check your fuel injectors, change the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure.

Correct. It was a bad distributor that was filling with oil during longer trips. This explains why it could do great the first 30 minutes of a day before barely being able to go up a 1 foot hill later (after filling with oil). My mechanic said that Toyota puts their distributors to the side, if it had been on top like most cars it would not have needed replacement.

A rebuilt one will cost me $223 + $80 labor.
