Hey everyone. As you may know I have a 370Z which only has two seats and sucks in snow. I've always wanted a sports car and while I don't regret my decision, I know it can't be my daily driver forever.

I've done well with winter tires and I think I can squeeze another winter out of them. But I've just started to think in my mind for possible second car to go along with a sports car. I also envision getting married/having kids soon because I've been with my gf for 4 years now.

Would I be able to find a good car for under 3000?
Possible choices I've been looking at:
Early 2000s outback or forester
Eary 2000s ford escape
Any small compact fwd box

Awd would be a plus but not required. Would also like at least 30mpg highway or close. Anyone have any insight? I would want to keep it for as long as possible and not have many issues. Of course I would get an inspection before I buy.

Honda Civic's a no brainer, I had a 2006 coupe and it was great in the snow.
Just make sure you get one that was adult owned and avoid the riced out hoopty's.

At that price point, I would shop condition more than brand. A decent mileage, well taken care of car will likely serve you very well compared to settling for a car in worse condition hoping that brand reputation carries the day.

That's true. Would a pre purchase inspection be a good gauge of coniditon? Even with one it is hard to guess what the previous owner has done to it

I am pretty brand open on this one but would like four doors and cheap to operate while being able to make long trips (up to 400 miles)

what state do you live in? Just gathering what kind of snow you are getting

Not sure what you mean by winter tires...you mean snow tires?

For many states, you are probably good enough of you had snow tires. I use to drive a RWD m3 with snow tires...its ran pretty well

I live in Connecticut but moving (hopefully to nj) in a couple months.

I do fine on winter or snow tires (called Dunlop winter sport) but this is mainly because my car only has two seats and if I have kids I would definitely need something. I want something high performance though so I was going back and forth between a sports car and a beater or something like an audi S4 as an only car. But this is still a while off, I'm not going to buy anything for a year at least. I just want to think about this a long time cause my Z was sort of an impulse lol

I have a Z as well and with a kid on the way and moving to Denver within the next year I am thinking the exact same way as you. In sunny Arizona I had no second thoughts about buying the Z, but I know it won't be very safe in the snow and ice. I'm liking the idea of the late 90's/early 2000's Outbacks/Imprezas, or perhaps something like an early 2000's Camry or Protege with some snow tires. All of those cars mentioned will run a very long time with proper maintenance.

Also one additional reason: I don't like this salt corroding my paint and causing rust lol the paint looks fine now but while it is fun to toss it around in snow I would rather have nasty salt on a beater car than my nice car

I am in NY, so snow isn't horrendous. If you plant to have kids, I'll just get a super safe vehicle. if its a daily, sporty fun factor & 4wd is a must....there are a few choices...yeah...audi comes to mind.

I have bmws as my fun cars and my kids ride in the lexus tank. The bad is I don't get to drive all that much
