trading my truck - want a few things fixed beforehand for better trade in value. have a few bad areas that need attention on my hood. may need an entire respray of the hood. i've got a toyota tacoma. its the super white or whatever its called.
Yea, I was thinking $500. I just dont want to trade it in and take a $1000 hit b/c they say that's how much it will cost them to fix it. You know how dealers are lol.
I just had a similar project on one of my vehicles ... although I was fixing it for myself, not resale.
Full price retail at my local automotive paint supplier for top-of-the-line primer, code mixed color base coat, and clear with catalyst and reducer was $160.00.
I pulled the hood and took it to my local paint shop, where they prepp'ed, did some very minor ding/hail repairs, block sanded it, and applied the paint for $100. They helped me install the hood, too, to make sure everything was OK.
Looks great, they did a nice clean job of application in their paint booth and allowed enough time for each coat to cure properly per manufacturer's spec before applying the next coat. I bought the paint for the job because I wanted to be 100% certain that it was all one manufacturer's compatible system ... which was the main failure on the hood from a prior respray. The paint shop apparently used different materials which weren't compatible and had a chemical reaction over a few years which crazed the paint.
$300 would likely be a minimum to do this for a top quality job. For your purpose of making the truck presentable for a trade-in, I wouldn't use the top quality materials. On my project, I would have saved about half the materials cost to have bought the generic/cheaper urethane system.
What year is the truck. Usually you only re-coup half the cost of repairs before selling. It is worse if you are trading in. I would just sell it as is to someone who doesn't care or can fix it himself.
I had a minivan with paint on the hood and roof gone. The Maaco guys quoted ~$500 for their basic probably crappy paint on the whole car. I asked how much for the hood, he said $800 because he would have to match the paint and then apply clearcoat. I am not sure what their cheap paint system is but apparently does not have clear coat
The material alone to do a complete with PPG Urethane would be more than $500. Maaco uses a much cheaper material, and the upcharge is for added masking and color match.
Just for reference, show quality completes on street rods is between 10 to 15k.
Labor would book at around 5 hrs. $50 per hr labor rate is $250. Materials would be $50 - $75, a half pint of base with a qt of low-grade clear, masking materials etc.
Find a small low-overhead operation and don't give 'em a dime over $325 incl. materials.
