I also have a dash cam to record my driving in case of an accident and to record traffic stops if I run across one. I've seen all of the online video's of power tripping cops and didn't think much of it until I ran across a dirty one that gave me a ticket for following too close (while legally passing on a one laner) along with not updating my address with the DMV. Neither infraction was true and I won my case via a strong written declaration (we're talking $600 here in fines not counting insurance) but I know it's well within reason that either I or my wife (who is half black and dark skinned) might one day get stopped by an idiot with a badge and I'd like to limit any issues.
^^ I didn't think of it that way. I agree that cops are untrustworthy and many a time I've heard news about cops shooting unarmed citizens because they "thought he was reaching for a weapon". Never mind that they asked for your license and registration...and you do need to reach for your wallet! It's a Catch-22!

Logical?
That info stays in my wallet as well. I think it comes down to a matter of preference.

Owner's and insurance cards in vehicle. Too many people use different vehicles at different times (well, I'm the only one who drives my new truck but both oldest son and daughter use my old truck. Their little brother will also use it when he gets his license in a couple weeks, The Taurus wagons are spares, everyone will use those, as they will the Lumina).

I just keep stuff in my car. If someone wants to know where you live, they would tail you home one day, anyway. Car thieves are usually smash and grab artists who like low/0 risk...not home invaders willing to trade bullets.

I have thought about this. I keep my registration and proof of insurance in my vehicle. I don't like having my address sitting in my unattended vehicle in this day & age of ID theft. However, if I don't do it that way, it's guaranteed that the day I get pulled over is the day I don't have it with me.

I don't know why we are still required to present registration. All cop cars have computers now, and with your license plate number they have access to all the info on your registration. Oh wait I do know why...because the bureaucrats do not give a tinker's damn about Joe Avg and his exposure to ID theft risk.

Proof of insurance is a different story. I don't know what an ID thief is going to do w/ my proof of insurance. It only has my name, policy number, and date of expiration.

I usually have a weapon on my person or in my vehicle.

Step 1: Advise the officer of this.
Step 2: Comply with reasonable requests.
Step 3: Before removing my hands from the steering-wheel, I ask the officer if they would like for me to exit the vehicle so that they can get what they are looking for after I tell them where it is/if a weapon is also visible in that compartment, or if they would like for me to get it for them, after advising.

I have literally NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES. Police officers are faced with 2 kinds of people: Those who want to kill them, and those who don't. I establish myself as one who doesn't ASAP, and am polite and friendly. It tends to work. Also gets me out of tickets because less stress for the officer is certainly appreciated. They tend to reciprocate as professional courtesy to me, as well as because I am being polite...something rare, it seems.

With just a name and general ID info, I have tracked people down to their home address, gotten their phone number, etc. etc. etc. I have pulled up satellite photos with the layout of their property, valuables visible in their yard/garage via Google Streetview, etc. You would be amazed...

Default Where should you keep your papers

I've always kept the insurance and registration in a clip on the sun visor. Very easy to reach. For some reason my glove box always seems to be stuffed with all kinds of other "essentials."

Well, when I'm ever pulled over and the cop asks for my license, etc. I keep my wallet in a front pants pocket. I ALWAYS advise the officer that my documents are in my front pocket, and "May I step out of the vehicle to produce my papers?" In most instances, he/she consents to such. I then step out and CAREFULLY reach for my wallet. I try to convey with my body language that I am not intent on harming the officer, by keeping my hands in full sight. Even when it's cold, I keep my hands away from my pockets!
