Lol, great.

Let me fix/update my maths
My Avalanche holds 30 gallons which is 114 litres.
Petrol is £1.30 x114 +£148 = $250 to fill up in England, here it would cost me $108 today at $3.60 per gallon.
I remember the day I arrived here in 1998 when I filled up at 79 cents per gallon, cheaper than the bottled water and milk, blew my mind.

Why did you go with the Avalanche if you don't mind me asking, and what year?

It is a 2004 and was cheap, high miles but exceptionally well looked after.
I needed something to tow a camper with and be a work truck, but still carry 4 people.
They look weird, but work well.

Toyota Highlander Limited AWD is my recommendation. We just replaced our 08' XC90 V8 with a new 2013 Highlander, and couldn't be happier! Smooth as silk, quiet as a church mouse, super easy to drive, can handle the elements without issue, has a split 3rd row, tons of cargo room, very easy to get in/out of, very comfortable, and the best part, the 2nd row can be configured as individual captain chairs. No more (you're on my side of the seat) fights. Our kids love ours! The new Highlander looks to be even nicer. We drove ours from DC to Naples Florida last month. 1,100 miles each way. Averaged 22mpgs with cruise control set at 79mph most of the time.

And the things just don't break. This is our 4th Toyota/Lexus product. All of the others saw 150,000 miles of trouble-free enjoyment, especially the 05' 4Runner that went to hell and back.

May not be the cool choice, but a minivan like the Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey would probably be the best bet for a reliable, comfortable family hauler.

Oh, and England to North Carolina in July?! Ouch.

We're a sturdy lot.

I agree with your car choice.
