'96 Eagle Talon ESI (non-turbo)... the brake light engagement mechanism more specifically.
The issue: when the brakes are released, it no longer turns the rear exterior brake lights off, so it stays on indefinitely.
The cause is near the brake pedal - a small dime-sized plastic blue disc that's cracked/broken and no longer engages(?) into a slot when the brake is released. That's the explanation my dad gave me. What is this part called since I'm trying to look for it on car part sites? Or what is the whole assembly called?
^ yes that's what it appears to be as a mechanism now that I look it up. Is there a part specifically the size of a dime? Is it just a washer? Sleeve, spacer, bushing - which may not have anything to do with why the light is on? Does the whole switch need to be ordered? Does the piece usually come separately?
another thing to check,
I'm not familiar with eagle talon, but if its like other *** cars. Sometimes it's not the brake light switch that goes bad.
There is usually a hard plastic round piece like a button shape on the back of the brake pedal. If it breaks off. Your brake light switch is not able to hit it, therefore the light stays on.
What caused it was an animal ran out and he had to jam on the brakes hard, so I think something physically is broken. The hard plastic round piece as Chris mentioned... is that part of the switch maybe? I assume when you say back of the brake pedal you mean the other end of the brake pedal assembly.
well I have the broken part in hand here and it's not the brake light switch itself as pictured above. It's the small blue plastic disc which that part above (the smaller end) would contact with. I need a name for it.

why don't you take a picture of whats broken then?
Call a dealership. Online parts stores probably won't get down to that level of detail. If they did, you would see that specific part on the parts diagrams you're looking at when you search brake light switch or brake pedal.
