Hi all

Have no idea what those are named specifically, but you all seen them. It's a black rubber tube, pinned to the road, filled with air, connected to some sort of a counter. Car drives over it, counter counts it, DMV collects data.
So far, it's all nice and dandy.
1 tube collects traffic data - how many cars drive through a particular road.
2 tubes collect speed data, how fast cars are going at a particular road span..

Wouldn't have been much to talk about except that I drove today over a pack of EIGHT of them, normally spaced apart.

EIGHT? What are eight for?

Was there 4 lanes of traffic going the same way? Maybe they were recording the traffic for each lane?

Unless the OP was able to drive down 4 lanes of traffic at the same time that wouldn't explain how HE drove over 8.

EDIT: actually I see what you're saying now, one of those days

Road tubes, automatic traffic counters.

FYI - For others who do not get it, 2 would only sense the 1st lane only, 2 would sense the second lane only, 2 would sense the 3rd lane only, etc.

See if they are different lengths, if so they are measuring different lanes. In cases where there are two together going over the same lanes they can be used to determine the speed at which cars are traveling, and provide good information for the police to set up a speed trap to ensure plenty of people getting caught.

Ummm yeah.. they will almost always go all the way across for mounting purposes regardless of which lane each is counting. Mounting some midroad would lead to being ripped out easier. And you will not get speed from those unless you also know the wheelbase of the vehicle. Which if the equipment for that was also present, radar/lidar equipment would be more cost effective.

I'll see if they cross the road all the way across.
Yes, it's 4 lane arterial with turn center lane, so it's five lane total.
I do get 2 tubes per lane. Makes sense.
Never ever saw such a pile before.
They also have little square boxes, about 4 x 4 inch, pinned to the tarmac, on the opposite side of an intersection. Look like Mayan pyramids, about 1 inch tall. Have no idea. They keep moving them around.

They really need to do something about the traffic in your neighborhood:
