It's been years since my last one, but I owned a couple Saab 9000s in the 80s and 90s. They were considered small cars, but they had copious amounts of space for 4 people, and with the back seat folded down, it was like having a pickup with a topper.

For me it was a friend's first gen Honda CR-V. The back seat could give a Sequoia a run for it's money.

When I test drove a 2008 Nissan Versa hatchback, I was impressed with the space.Especially the headroom.

Yeah I'm a bigger guy and I sat in one once years ago for fun and was shocked at the room. Also there seemed to be virtually zero blind spots if I remember correctly and lots of head room.

I also am 6' 2" and was surprised to find that I could drive my wife's Toyota Corolla very comfortably. I would not want to try out the back seat, however!

Your thread title caught my eye because I bought my 2007 Chevy Aveo in 2009, and I am still struck by how roomy it feels inside.

Now if they could just come up with a fix for that recent pesky safety alert.

Apart from that, I have really enjoyed this car both around town and on road trips; it never feels cramped inside.

The original mini was the definition of small car that was big on the inside

Compare that to a similarly size (but still a bit smaller) Messerschmitt KR200

But Messerschmitt bubble cars had huge glass canopies, just like the planes the factory built 15 years earlier during WWII. The probably felt bigger than they look.

The Citroen 2CV was equally impressive. Mostly due to the wicker seats... You could fit your family AND what your going to sell at the market in it!

Maybe so, but the front seemed claustrophobic to me (and no, I'm not in any way claustrophobic).

Seconding the original Mini. We have one, our project car, and I am shocked at the room inside. The bride owned one as her first car and drove it until she had her 4th child, and then the family just didnt fit anymore.

And this one-Renault Dauphine. It;s tiny but you could fit 4 adults in it. It's like some sort of Tardis inside.

The VW Squareback was roomy and comfortable in a small package, as was the Renault R-10.
