What people ignore is that the disparity between gasoline prices and diesel prices (and diesel fuel is what really keeps the economy running) is widening. Right now, where I live, diesel fuel is over 33% higher in price than gasoline. Get ready to see big inflation in everything you buy if that keeps up.
Paid $2.35 gal for 87 octane today here in Phoenix, AZ. With the holidays approaching wouldn't be surprised prices back jump up again. It happens with most major holidays here.

That's normal due to the winter, diesel comes from the same source as home heating oil so in winter demand goes way up. You will notice that it goes back closer to gas prices in the summer.

Yes, I'm completely familiar with that. Still, the disparity right now is pretty large. The bigger long-term problem is that the US lacks sufficient refining capability to produce ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel, especially from the heavy, sour crude that makes up much of this country's remaining oil reserves. So, we export cheaper high sulfur diesel to the Third World and import more expensive ULSD.
I'm sure our forward-thinking population will put those gas price savings into their retirement funds, emergency savings, or college for their children and won't just use this as an excuse to buy a bigger vehicle.
