I'm a sucker for a really cool dashboard, a la the dashboards of the older Thunderbirds and Gran Prix's. I sit behind the wheel of one these cars, and I find myself wanting to buy the car, no matter what's under the hood! Yup! Pretty crazy, huh?

I see pictures, in the magazines, of the dashboards of even some of these new luxury cars, most recently a photo of a Black Edition car, and I'm puzzled as to why the dashboard is so boring! Wouldn't buy that car just because of the dashboard!

Am I the only weirdo that let's a dashboard design factor into a car purchase? Please say no!

You can thank crash compliance for that. They have a billion airbags and soft surfaces. And every car has a console and jet fighter cockpit look.

I like many of the dashboards of 1970s and earlier American cars.

For example, this 1966 Plymouth Fury VIP:

I think the stitched look is getting a little out of hand, especially with GM and Toyota. I wonder how well it will hold up over time. Another thing I hate is the tablets stuck onto the dash, like in some newer Mercedes, and GM is doing it with the 2016 Malibu as well.

Fleet, that interior looks dangerous! If you get in a wreck in that thing you can kiss all of your teeth goodbye.

One of my brothers drove a car just like that one for over 20 years. He still has all of his teeth!

I would take the risk for the opportunity to drive cars I actually want to drive.

You can thank the popularity of Japanese cars for the boring dash designs of today. That's my opinion after watching the changes over the las 30 years. To me, the dash design is more important than the body design. I have to look at the dash, and use it, more than I have to look at the body.

A lot of it is function. Sure a shiny dashboard might look cool, but when the sun hits it your eyes burn.

Likewise digital dashes have a lot of LEDs and stuff that can wear out.

Can you show a picture of a “boring” dash? They are pretty jazzed up compared with just 5 years ago.
