Where were you steering of to when your front end was smashed in enough to set off the steering wheel airbag?
The car was out of control, for whatever reason, and hit a small tree in the small median. That set off the airbag, but the car was still rolling. There was no way to grab the wheel before it hit the big tree on the other side, which is how we got the car to stop.

Well, that pretty much repeats what I said: If the airbag's gone off, you've already lost control and have hit something. There won't be much steering after that point anyhow...
You had already lost control, hit something and the airbag went off, and were unable to steer no matter what your hand position was.
Congrats, you failed day one at any performance driving school.
I don't usually have to drive through the middle of a demolition derby or an endurance race to get around. Anyone who says they do, is probably a nervous Nellie.
I use 11:30-4, but am starting to use 9-3 more. My steering wheel is set up for 9-3 with paddles, turn signals, and all buttons for different functions I can flip through along with radio volume all can be used without taking hands off wheel holding at 9-3.
You are very quick to point out to others that they did not answer the OP original question, but your own answers appear to be related to the textbook answer of the question. Do you, while traveling on the highway, always drive with two hands in the "9 and 3" or "10 and 2" positions? The original question is asking for your preferred driving position.
I teach defensive driving and accident avoidance, and am very aware of what is the "correct" way to operate a vehicle. I also know that I, and most others on the road at any time, do not drive according to the rulebook most of the time.
(I know this wasn't directed at me, but it's harder to multi quote the op on an iPad)
I do 9 and 3 or 10 and 2 about 95% of the time, even on long trips. In the summer I may rest my left elbow at the open window. Sometimes I'll briefly switch to 9 and 12 with the elbow. Never use the center armrest as a driver, drives me nuts if someone flips it down.
I can easily do this for hours.
No air bags, always a stick.
Those of you saying one hand at 6 scare the p**p out of me - talk about no control!
Credentials: years of track racing and high performance driving instructor for teens who already had a license. I always drove with the seat one notch closer on the track, but otherwise keep a good distance, can't stand to be bound up on the steering wheel (no control then either).
Oh, ex-SIL did the slam the seat all the way up with both hands at 6. Think I lasted 2 miles with her. Never again.
Always two hands on the wheel, at 10 and 2 for city or busy road traffic, more often 8 and 4 on a freeway.
